The Canadian-owned Gamma Resources has filed a notice of intent to drill up to 12 exploratory boreholes in the Chama Basin Watershed, home to centuries-old acequia irrigation systems and one of the most water-sensitive landscapes in northern New Mexico. The area supports traditional communities that have sustained agriculture for more than 400 years and provides critical water resources that, if contaminated by uranium, would require extraordinarily expensive, and likely impossible, remediation. Tell decision makers not to prioritize foreign mining profits over the protection of this unique watershed, our culture, and our traditional communities.

Urge the Governor to formally oppose uranium mining proposals across New Mexico — not just in Canjilón, but at Mount Taylor and Shiprock as well. The Governor has the power to direct state agencies to assert New Mexico’s environmental permitting and water quality authority early in any federal review process.

Ask your state legislators to strengthen New Mexico law to better regulate surface and groundwater quality related to uranium mining — closing the gaps that currently leave communities vulnerable when federal protections fall short.

The Secretary of EMNRD and the Director of the Mining and Minerals Division have direct authority over state-level mining regulation. Urge them to assert New Mexico’s permitting authority and impose the strongest possible conditions on any uranium exploration or extraction proposal in the state.
